In some families Ramadan is above all a time when the adults are tired. Yet it is the month that translates most easily into a child’s world, because so much about it is visible.

Children can set the table, put out the dates, bring a bowl to the neighbours or light the lamp in the evening. Such tasks are small, but they give a child a real place inside something big.

In the end the atmosphere matters more than any explanation. If a child experiences Ramadan as a time when the family moves closer together and more is shared, it will need fewer words later to understand what the month is about.
