Taking small children on umrah
For small children a journey to Makkah is above all one thing: a lot. Many people, a lot of noise, little sleep, an unfamiliar rhythm. Knowing this in advance leads to different planning and to expecting less from any single day.
What helps most is telling the journey beforehand. Where are we going, what will we see, what will we do there and what is different from home. Children who carry a story in their heads recognise the place when they arrive and feel safer.
This is exactly why I wrote "A Surprise in Makkah". It is not a travel guide but a read aloud story that gives children a picture beforehand and helps them afterwards to put what they experienced into their own words.
