In many families the hardest hour of the day lies between dinner and bed. The children are tired, the adults are too, and every request suddenly sounds like an imposition.

In such moments I have stopped explaining. Instead I say what I see: you are tired, and you do not want to stop playing yet. Most of the time it goes quiet for a moment after that.

The child has not got what it wanted. But it has been seen, and that is often enough for the next step to work.
